Manchester City will be banned from entering any European competition for the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been found guilty of committing ‘serious breaches’ of UEFA’s ruling on club licensing and financial fair play regulations.

The club have also been fined €30 million euros (£25 million)

Manchester City said they were ‘disappointed but not surprised’ by the verdict in an official statement. It went on to launch a scathing attack on UEFA and the ‘prejudicial’ case they launched. The statement goes on to confirm the club will appeal the decision and ‘commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity.’

Whilst the verdict stands, it is a severe dent to City’s motivation on the pitch for remainder of the campaign. They currently sit 22 points adrift from league leaders Liverpool and take on Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League which even if they win, will have no chance of taking part in next season.

The announcement has of course led to widespread mocking from rival fan bases. One Arsenal fan sarcastically and rather foolishly claimed the verdict was an act of revenge from former Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger (Head of global football development at FIFA, not UEFA).

Others used it a chance to poke fun at those running the country as well as those running the club.

Fans of reigning European champions and title rivals Liverpool did not waste the chance to stick the boot in.

Guardiola’s future as City boss was shrouded in doubt anyway, with speculation linking him to a move away from Manchester at the end of the season. Juventus are the club rumoured to be in pole position to secure his signature. This news can only add fuel to the fire when it comes to reports surrounding Pep’s future.
