Barcelona have had a catastrophic week, Eric Abidal’s comments caused division before being knocked out of the Copa Del Rey by Athletic Bilbao.

Former player turned sporting director Eric Abidal caused controversy this week as he made what many saw as a shot towards the players when he claimed some of them were responsible for Ernesto Valverde’s sacking.

The situation became a PR disaster when Barca captain Lionel Messi bit back, the Argentine superstar calling for his old teammate to either name the players in question or be quiet.

Since the Copa Del Rey exit, the pressure is seemingly reaching boiling point as Jordi Alba weighed in also calling for the club to remain united in the face of this adversity.

Many believe Abidal now has a fight on his hands he can’t win, as falling out with Lionel Messi is very much the kiss of death for anyone who wants to remain in a job with the Catalan giants.

This feud of course has now sparked speculation that Messi will be the one to part ways with Barca after spending his entire career thus far there. Both Manchester clubs have been linked to be the main front runners in his long list of potential suitors, though City boss Pep Guardiola has taken the bizarre step of publicly stating he hopes Messi stays at Barca.

Messi and Guardiola will know all about each other, the former having played under the latter during Pep’s first managerial job at Barca. Whether Barca’s skipper wants to reignite his relationship with an old flame will remain to be seen, but Barcelona need to stop the infighting if they are to get their season back on track.
