Rory Stewart is aiming to become the new Mayor for London and has launched 'Come Kip with me' to help understand Londoners more
Rory Stewart has launched his new campaign - Come kip with me - as he aims to become Mayor of London.
Stewart has put his political career on the line in recent times. A former Government Minister and Tory MP, Stewart was stripped of the Tory Whip in September 2019 when he voted against his Government in the Commons on a crucial Brexit related vote.
Now standing to be London Mayor in the upcoming elections in May 2020, Stewart is running as an independent.
Having launched a new campaign 'Come Kip With Me', where Stewart wants to really get a sense of the life of Londonders, the former MP told Love Sport Radio: "My instinct is I learn a surprising amount. Having a meal with somebody, chatting to them in the evening before you go to bed, making a cup of coffee with them in the morning - people open up in a way that they don't if you just knock on their door or talk to them in the street.

"When I was staying with Lorraine in Newham, she could show me the chicken shop where someone had been killed, she could talk about why she felt scared walking through the streets at certain times at night.
"These would be very difficult things to pick up if you weren't staying with someone."
Asked how many homes he has stayed at, Stewart stated: "I've been doing this i'm afraid for a very long time. So far in britain and other places I've stayed in 550 different people's houses.
"If i'm Mayor of London I'd aim to do this every week, at least one night a week.
"We've got, I think now, over a 1000 people writing back saying they'd like me to stay."
Asked how this all started, Stewart recalled his previous career as a motivating factor.
"I started doing this nearly 20-years ago now. I started doing it because I was a soldier and diplomat in Afghanistan and Iraq. I realised I didn't know enough about everyday people's lives because often if you're in a war zone you're in a guarded compound."
