Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Lee Harper thinks Arsenal would be best off by playing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang centrally in order to utilise his goal scoring ability.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Everton, the former Arsenal shot stopper revealed to Andy Hodgson’s Kicking Off that he thinks Aubameyang’s main talents are being hindered out on the flanks.

“The one thing I’m frustrated with more than anything at the moment is we have got a proven goalscorer scoring bundles of goals, and I don’t like him on the left, I don’t like him on the right. I want him playing in the middle.

“I know Arteta is trying to accommodate Lacazette and Aubameyang in the same team, but I’d rather Aubameyang in and around the box poaching goals.”

Though the Gabonese striker did notch two of his side’s three goals yesterday, you’d be hard pushed to find any of the Emirates faithful who would disagree with Harper’s claims.

Aubameyang is one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers; he sits joint top of the goal scoring charts with 17, only matched by Leicester City's talisman Jamie Vardy.

Arsenal’s win yesterday comes exactly a week after they put four second-half goals past Newcastle with no reply at The Emirates. In that clash, Aubameyang revealed in his post-match comments that boss Mikel Arteta asked him to take up a more central role after an unsuccessful stint on the left-wing in the first-half.

Aubameyang’s influence was stifled in Arsenal’s last Europa League clash as well. The Gunners skipper being deployed both on the left and right wing in his side’s 1-0 away win over Olympiacos in their first-leg last-32 tie.

With Mikel Arteta’s side currently dwelling in ninth, many feel Arsenal may struggle to keep hold of their star striker this summer.

Harper claimed securing Champions League football is vital if they want to keep Aubameyang at the Emirates. “I think we should be looking at getting in the top four again. The backing Man City and Liverpool get from their boards is a big problem. I really feel Mr Kronke, to get Arsenal back, Arteta is going to need serious money.

“I don’t think we are a million miles away, but the problem we’ve got is if we don’t keep making the Champions League are we going to be able to keep hold of the likes of Aubameyang and strengthen our team around people like him.”
