Ex-Rangers midfielder Gordon Smith thinks Alfredo Morelos will still be at Ibrox come the end of this window despite reports linking him with a move away.
Alfredo Morelos is Rangers leading marksmen this season with 12 goals in 18 appearances. The fiery Columbian is a large reason as to why Rangers find themselves in a very close title fight with fierce rivals Celtic.
Steven Gerrard’s men are just five points behind Celtic with a game in hand, though yesterday’s defeat to Hearts can be considered a golden opportunity missed.
Had they won at Tynecastle to a Hearts team that hadn’t won once in their previous ten, Rangers would have been in pole position to leapfrog Celtic into top spot should they have won their game in hand.
However, after going 1-0 up, Gers spurned many chances to put themselves out of sight and paid the price as Hearts fought back to snatch a 2-1 win courtesy of a late Liam Boyce winner.
Morelos has been out of action since his side’s huge victory at Celtic Park in December in which the striker picked up his second red card of the season. He missed out on yesterday’s clash whilst he served the final game of his 3-match suspension and would have backed himself to put away some of the chances his side created in his absence.
There has been numerous reports that Morelos is heading towards the exit door, his temperamental issues are a cloud that hangs over the Columbian’s Ibrox legacy. However, speaking to Love Sport’s Breakfast show, Former Rangers midfielder Gordon Smith thinks the striker is here to stay - for now.
“I think it will be a big blow (if he leaves) but I don’t think they’ll move him on at this stage. I don’t think he’ll go in this window.”
“I think they will keep him until the end of the season because there will be a lot of criticism for the club if they sold their leading goal scorer at a stage where they are challenging for league titles.”
Smith praised Rangers strength in depth in the striker position, and thinks it will allow Morelos to have a less disruptive exit at the end of the season.
“Defoe is a top class player. I think Defoe is a better player than Morelos but Morelos is getting the goals, I think the fact is that these two players competing for the striker position helps so I don’t think Morelos will go until the summer.”
