Crystal Palace told to buy striker instead of waiting for Christian Benteke

Crystal Palace cannot afford to wait for Christian Benteke to return and solve their goal-scoring issues, according to one former player.

Penalty-taker Luka Milivojevic is currently Palace's top-scorer in the Premier League with six while their next most prolific is Andros Townsend with just three.

Jordan Ayew has scored in his last two games in all competitions but they remain short of options up front and sit just six points clear of the drop zone in the league table.

Benteke is expected to return from a knee injury in the coming weeks but former Palace defender Dean Gordon reckons

"Most clubs need a striker. I know Benteke should be coming back from injury but I think [we need] a player that can pop up with a few players but it costs a lot of money these days to bring in a top striker," Gordon told Love Sport's Weekend Breakfast (Saturdays and Sundays, 8am-midday)

"They've spent a lot of money over the last few years."

Manager Roy Hodgson revealed last week that Benteke is back in full training for the first time since September and the Belgium international is likely to be welcomed back with a place in the starting line-up.

But Hodgson would not be drawn on his transfer plans over the coming weeks and Gordon is keen for the club to pounce when and where they can.

"Defensively, we look okay," Gordon added.

"We can always strengthen the spine of the team - centre-back, central midfield, centre-forward - if they can pick up a bargain somewhere, someone that can add something new to the team, I think it would be worthwhile.

"A new fresh face in the changing room can also help the camaraderie within the team and with the players to keep things fresh."
